About Kate Hubert
I’m a freelance writer and video producer with an eclectic range of experience: I’ve made wildlife documentaries for the BBC, written articles for superyacht magazines, worked with PR for boat-builders as well as being a restaurant critic and lifestyle magazine writer (to name just a few.) The natural world consumed the first half of my life; rooting around in muddy puddles or watching wildlife TV programmes. This propelled me to study Biology at Oxford (after a terrifying first interview with Richard Dawkins.) After college I joined the prestigious BBC Natural History Unit. Over thirteen years I worked my way up from library assistant through researcher to director, eventually becoming a Series Producer. But my ambition was satisfied when I worked with the man who’d inspired me as a girl, Sir David Attenborough. Writing scripts for this consummate broadcaster and wordsmith was one of the few pleasures to be enjoyed in the office. What I really loved was being in the field (and as you become more senior you tend to become more desk-bound). As well as some hurricane chasing (I’ve been through three) I’ve been charged by a bull elephant, sniffed by a lion, climbed a brazil nut tree with no ropes, swum with piranhas and even waded into a Florida swamp carrying an alligator…Wanderlust beckoned and I ran away to sea, living aboard a 44ft sailing yacht based in Thailand for 4 years, exploring South East Asia, competing in regattas and generally enjoying life. Seductive as the yachtie lifestyle was, my brain needed exercise and I soon found myself starting to write for local magazines. I’d always loved writing – thrilling when my stories were read aloud at school; proud when my Forestry tutor at Oxford told me he looked forward to my essays as they were always well-written stories rather than just dry science. And of course I’d honed my writing skills coming up with scripts at the BBC, adapting my voice to suit the audience and the narrator.
