I'm a Senior Cartographer with experience in many aspects of GIS and cartography, with a recent focus on full-stack basemap cartography at major tech companies. My maps have been used by millions of people. My pre-cartography experience prepared me well. I spent years in the Seattle software industry, honing the disparate skillset that makes me good at cartography and GIS analysis. My focus was on IT and customer service leadership, and I’ve also worked in data quality, project management, QA, writing and editing, and documentation and training. I'm deeply familiar with interactive map technologies like Mapbox and MapLibre, as well as desktop GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS).I'm comfortable anywhere from the finest aesthetic details of design to the command line. In all roles, I'm a flexible generalist who enjoys solving problems and improving quality. Geeks are my people.

Through Stamen Design, I designed new map styles to accompany the launch of new vector map data tiles created by AWS Location Service. We created and refined four basemaps: - Light reference (muted colors) - Dark reference (muted colors) - Light data visualization (greys) - Dark data visualization (greys)The light reference style launched as part of the service’s preview in late 2022. The other three styles launched when the service reached General Availability in March 2023.
Through Stamen Design, I worked on a small cartographic team that improved, maintained, and added new features to the vector tile basemap used throughout Facebook and Instagram. In addition to visual improvements, I conducted a thorough reorganization of the vast number of build files used to generate the vector data tiles and map stylesheets. This made the cartographic system simpler and easier to use, less redundant, and more consistent. I also wrote the first version of the layers documentation for Meta’s Earth Table database.

• As Amazon's sole cartographer, I drove the roadmap for cartography at Amazon, integrating priorities from several teams and collaborating with product, engineering, data science, QA, and design to improve map quality and meet user needs. • My map styles were in use by dozens of teams across Amazon, including Flex (delivery driver app with over a million users), PrimeNow, AWS QuickSight, PrimeAir, and many internal-facing applications. • I maintained a suite of 56 map stylesheets, variants of 4 main styles, that satisfied needs such as localization and different languages, various data sources, low-end device performance, and diverse use cases. I designed a proprietary automated system to more efficiently manage these sets of related map stylesheets.• I conducted an analysis of how map styles affect map renderer memory usage and used the results to performance-tune all stylesheets to use less memory while minimizing visual changes.• I developed and managed the internal customer onboarding process for Amazon Maps, including documentation, ticket management, onboarding meetings, and status tracking.

I worked on special projects in several areas including cartography, web communication, graphic design, business analysis, Python scripting/automation, and ArcGIS administration. My biggest focus was designing and maintaining the City's basemap in both raster and vector tile formats.
Took some time off to focus on my GIS studies and work on personal projects.
TEAM LEADERSHIP: Built and led the content quality, customer service, and community management department from its inception into a successful, high-performing, 19-person team. Accomplishments include: - Running a cost-effective team (mostly remote) with extremely low turnover and high job satisfaction, despite the repetitive and low-end nature of much of the work. - Maintaining site and app quality by approving, creating, updating, and monitoring millions of content items in over 20 categories, sourced from user-generated, third-party, and internally created content. - Enforcing high standards on all written and spoken communication with external users, which had a large impact on the company’s reputation for integrity. During my employment, coverage grew from 341 metro areas and 8126 neighborhoods to 373 metros and 17,802 neighborhoods. I was personally responsible for every point of every polygon drawn during that time. - Manually remapped Australia and the United Kingdom, in addition to many states, provinces, and cities. - Reviewed all boundary update requests from users, applying my own judgment, experience, and research to decide whether to accept them and if further adjustments were necessary. COMPANY STRATEGY: As the first employee and leader of the company’s largest department, I was a member of the corporate leadership team that defined and communicated company strategy and financials.
