Profile bio

About Katelyn Martin

When I began college at USF, my goal was to become a pharmacist. I took courses in chemistry, biology, physics, and math working towards a Biomedical Sciences degree while simultaneously working full time as a pharmacy technician. Working in retail pharmacy, I was too far removed from the research behind the medications that I prepared for patients and the realities of the job were not what I had idealized. I began exploring more opportunities in medical science. My search led me to a position assisting in a hospital microbiology lab. My role was to grow and process specimens for microbial testing. At the same time, I began a program with a technical college to earn my clinical laboratory scientist license. After working closely with laboratory scientists at the hospital, I learned they were most responsible for treating cells with medications and observing the cell response. Although this is important work to identify the best medications to prescribe a patient, this work was a smaller scale than I envision as a career path for myself. Shortly after, I returned to USF to work towards a second B.S. in Applied and Computational Mathematics. Most recently, I began an undergraduate research position in a molecular oncology research lab. I was interested in research because it was a chance to better understanding of the role of genetics in cancer. I have also gained a better understanding of experimental design and learned how to perform critical evaluation of published literature. My work here has opened my mind to a new way of thinking and made me confident in my choice to improve my skill set both with continued education and work experience.Moving forward I am very interested in mathematical modeling as well as other areas of quantitative analysis. I am eager to learn and translate my experience into a more analytical role. I would love to hear more about your experiences or opportunities, so please feel free to get in touch anytime.
