About Katelyn Jones
I am a PhD Candidate in the Materials Science and Engineering department at Carnegie Mellon University advised by Dr. Elizabeth Holm and Dr. Anthony Rollett. I am on track to defend my thesis in April 2024. My thesis is entitled: Applying Machine Learning and Computer Vision to the Study of Fatigue Fracture Surfaces.During my studies I have used Python to develop tools in Tensorflow and Pytorch to develop classification and regression models trained on optical, scanning election, and back scatter electron images of fatigue fracture surfaces on Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64). The images I work with are a combination of images from previous work and those I have collected on my own. My work is funded by and in collaboration with scientists at the air force research lab. I am searching career that will allow me to continue to use the skills I have gained from exploring how machine learning and computer vision can be used in the study of fatigue fracture. I enjoy having conversations about innovation, films, and travel. I am looking to stay in the Atlanta or Washington D.C. metro area close to family I have in each location. Thesis: Applying Machine Learning and Computer Vision to the Study of Fatigue fracture Surfaces-Developed a machine learning algorithm in Python to perform fractographic analysis on 102 images of a fatigue crack growth test on samples of Ti-64 with aeroengine fan blade simulated microstructure, which undergoes fatigue loading and the lifetime is limited by fatigue safety conditions -Applied transfer learning techniques to classify the forging direction and load ratio with average accuracies over 90% for each and a lack of bias in the predicted results and trained a separate model to predict the crack length within a root mean squared error distance of 2mm of the true value and a coefficient of determination 0.89, proving a strong correlation between the images and predicted values. -Conducting research during the summers at the Air Force Research Lab in Dayton, OH as a part of research funding contract, presenting research to staff researchers and using their equipment and samples for further thesis work-Building a dataset of secondary electron images of fatigue fracture surface images with samples provided by the AFRL concentrating on the short crack region; currently, the dataset contains ~4,300 images, but will have ~5,600 images once complete-Applying unsupervised learning to this dataset while the images are collected to find natural separations in the dataset based on distance, imaging conditions, or fatigue life and loading conditionsMaterials Science Graduate Student Advisory Council: Diversity Equity and Inclusion Chair May (2021-2022), Professional Development Chair May (2022-2023)CMU Black Graduate Student Organizaton Social Chair May (2021-2022)
