My relationship to mindfulness (particularly to MBSR) arose in a very specific way. I came across its transformative power to restore and maintain physical, mental and emotional health and to foster resilience, during the course of a serious illness, a decade-and-a-half ago.Since then, I have been passionate about bringing mindfulness and MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) training to all who care about looking after themselves - in both the public and corporate domain. Mindfulness training cultivates and hones our ability to live more meaningful lives of deep satisfaction. It is a way of moving out of the perpetual 'doing' mode where we live much of our lives, into the more caring, expansive 'being' mode. Mindfulness training is a way of getting to know yourself better. Forging a healthy relationship with oneself, and cultivating skills in self-awareness and self-regulation, are vitally important in this high-speed 21st century world that comes at us inexorably, causing significant stresses that are part and parcel of our way of life.Physical training is vital for a healthy body. Mental training is just as important for a healthy mind and life. MBSR is a form of mental training, a way of training the mind, originating from ancient eastern traditions, that can radically change our lives for the better. It can transform our relationship to ourselves, to our bodies, to the way we think, feel and act - at work, at home and at play. Three decades of research have proven MBSR to be a highly effective method of engaging with life that cultivates mental, physical and psychological resilience and welling, and strengthens emotional intelligence. It is often said that mindfulness - or attention training - is a practice that brings us home to ourselves - the selves that we may have lost in the 'busyness' of this time-accelerated world of perpetual multi-tasking. It is only then that we can lead with focus, clarity and compassion.www.balance-life.org
