About Kate Nankervis

Kate Nankervis is a dancer, choreographer, teacher, and curator. Her work takes forms of collaboration, artistic research, performance, installation, and exhibition by way of experimental projects informed by social dance, clubbing genres, and modern/postmodern and contemporary dance. Her work creates dance experiences vital to physical and mental health, community care, and placemaking. For more than 15 years, she has performed and collaborated with other artists and choreographers from across Canada and internationally. Kate’s work has been hosted by: the Toronto Dance Theatre, Dancemakers Centre for Creation, Harbourfront Centre, Doris McCarthy Gallery (Scarborough), Studio 303, Tangente Danse (Montreal), Practice Play (Bangalore), Earth Dance (Massachusetts), Lakestudio Berlin, Sign Six (Brussels), Visual Art Studies (Buffalo), Athens Video Dance Festival, Canoa Dance Exchange (Brazil). Working in the Community, she is a co-founder of the Dance Together Festival, an open-air summer dance program in Amos Waites Park, Mimico. She has worked at the City of Toronto’s Nuit Blanche and ArtworxTO: Toronto’s Year of Public Art, transforming civic spaces into artistic spaces. She is a member of DoorTODoor Dances, delivering dances to seniors in long-term care residences. She is a founding collective member of Toronto Dance Community Love-In (2010- 2019), and former co-artistic director (2013- 2016) of Hub14 art + performance, both change-making organizations dedicated to research, creation, and artistic development for independent artists with a spirit of d-y-t. A generous and passionate teacher, she can be found sharing dance practice in community centers, online, in public spaces, and with dance organizations. Kate is a recipient of the Danceweb Scholarship at ImpulsTanz, Vienna (2019), an Ontario Arts Council’s Chalmers Fellowship (2016), a recipient of the UNESCO performing arts award (2008), and is supported by the Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts on various projects. She is a graduate of York University’s BFA Dance program. Kate is based in Etobicoke/ Tkaranto and is traditionally known as the territory of Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples.
