    Trinity College Library is one of the legal deposit or “copyright” libraries of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Legal deposit libraries have, by law, the obligation to deposit all printed items including newspapers, journals, pamphlets, sheet music and maps, within a month of their publication to the designated libraries. The purpose of this is to establish and maintain an archival record of a nation’s published output.Having more than four million volumes in the repositories, TCD also has an extensive collection of Early Printed Books, Manuscripts and Maps for which The Glucksman Conservation Department is responsible for developing and implementing preservation strategies across all library collections as well as conservation treatments of collection material.Key duties and responsibilities as Book and Manuscript Conservator of TCD involve• The documentation, treatment, and housing of bound and unbound collections from the Early Printed Book and Manuscript collections.• Participate in the development of preservation strategies, and liaise with the Keeper of preservation and conservation and Keepers of collections on treatment priorities and options.• Participate in the NPO Preservation Assessment Survey (PAS) of manuscripts, archives, and modern collections at TCD library.• Supervise visiting interns and students, preservation assistants, and contractors as required.• Participating in the delivery of training on preservation and conservation topics, including disaster recovery and storage and handling.• Assisting with environmental monitoring of the Old Library and Santry Book Repository.• Assessing the suitability of items for digitising and microfilming. • Assisting with the preparation of items for exhibition and loan. • Contribute to the success of the department through continuous professional development, participation in department meetings, and research.

    The Architectural Archive holds the records of the Cathedral’s Surveyor to the Fabric and Clerk of Works. The records date back to the mid-19th century and comprise written, graphic, recorded and digital material including: watercolours, Line-drawings, photo-mechanical reproductions, such as blue-prints and dyelines, photographic prints, glass negatives, CD-Roms, DVDs and video recordings.Main duties:• To evaluate the conservation and re-housing needs of items in the collection on a day to day basis.• To re-house the architectural drawings in appropriate packaging • To construct appropriate packaging in acid-free materials for the documentary and photographic materials where necessary• To assess and record the condition of the documents at the time re-housing on supplied printed forms• To record progress with photography• To assist with the training and supervision of volunteers and occasional staff in handling• To assist in production of documentation on preservation of the archive• To assist in the presentation of work in progress in the archive to visitors, parties and funding bodies
