Research Experience:* Simulated adhesion between realistic hydrocarbon materials to examine the effects of composition, roughness, and contact point.* Calculated the mechanical properties of materials and interfaces, such as elastic modulus and work of adhesion, from simulation to compare with those extracted from experiments by applying continuum contact mechanics models to experimental data.* Refined parameterization of reactive empirical bond-order potentials using a LaGrangian approach to obtain charge at each atomic site enabling the modeling of electrostatic interactions as well as chemical reactivity.Teaching Experience:* Developed and taught tutorial "Interatomic Potentials for Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Materials" that provided an introduction to interatomic potentials with “hands on” examples of MD simulations and data analysis. Ph.D. student in Computational Chemistry* Performed molecular dynamics simulations of cluster bombardment of molecular solids to explain the atomic-scale physics and identify the impact of changing input variables on ejection yields, energy deposition, and surface damage.* Developed analytical models derived from Newton’s equations of motion that explain the general dynamics associated with cluster bombardment such as projectile motion and energy deposition.* Received seven student awards and fellowships for my research as well as published peer-reviewed journal articles and presented at international conferences.
