I completed my MSc in the department of Pathology. My main project involved improving gene editing outcomes by designing plasmids for the safer and more efficient use of CRISPR technology as well as identifying endogenous factors that affect DNA repair.

I independently performed lab procedures to further research into the vaginal microbiome and its role in HIV acquisition. I was involved in multiple projects by preparing and quantifying peptides for mass spectrometry, and analysing cellular profiles by flow cytometry. I improved my computer skills by learning how to use R for data analysis.

As part of my Honours project, I assisted a PhD student studying an invasive population of Barbary ground squirrels. We trapped the squirrels to weigh them, assess their physical and reproductive condition, and humanely take tissue samples for genetic analysis. Solo lab work included DNA extraction, primer design, and PCR amplification of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA to examine population genetics. A manuscript is in preparation.

I worked in Dr. Mark Belmonte's lab preparing diagrams for presentations and assisting Masters and PhD students with lab work. I genotyped samples and helped maintain plants in order to support research into canola seed development and fungal infections.
