I enjoyed leading a great team; launching and leading our sustainability communications offer for clients; developing our marketing communications, including blogs, articles, case studies and 15 plain English technical guides to demystify sustainability; writing thinkstep-anz’s first (award-winning) integrated reports; and making plain English part of our external and internal brands. Clients included First Foundation, Advocacy Answers, the Infrastructure Sustainability Council, Te Pū Oranga Whenua, Selwyn Community Education, Bike Auckland and many small and medium-sized businesses. Completed much of GoodSense's B Corp application; taught community education (ESOL, CV writing, plain English), helped private clients produce career documents to weather the storm that was COVID-19. And I weathered it too!

An interesting change management role helping Tourism Holdings become a Future-Fit (FF) business. THL's the first organisation in New Zealand to implement the global Future-Fit methodology to assess, manage and report on our social, environmental and economic impacts over 23 goals linked to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. My role involved engaging our internal and external stakeholders (including our THL crew, customers, suppliers, media and the tourism industry) in this work through communications, training, events and activities. An interesting role that helped KiwiRail be a good neighbour to the communities it connects, keep people safe around railway tracks, and show New Zealanders the benefits of rail. I developed and rolled out KiwiRail's community engagement strategy, expanding the employee ambassador programme, launching new community partnerships, national and regional campaigns, supporting major projects, managing issues and running community events. The highlight? Leading Rail Safety Week 2019, an award-winning national campaign that generated significant digital and media activity and engaged communities, business partners, government and employees across the country: www.nearmisses.co.nz.

This was a great job! I developed and delivered the airport's award-winning community relations strategy to connect the airport and south Auckland community. The airport's capital programme provides a unique opportunity to create 'shared value' – to help build a skilled, local workforce and connect local people with jobs across the airport precinct. I helped set up Ara, Auckland Airport's Jobs and Skills Hub, and ran a community programme themed around education, employment and the environment: five education sponsorships (including Polyfest), ten annual scholarships, community events and 50 grants. I was also a trustee of the Auckland Airport Community Trust, supported environmental sustainability activities, wrote the annual sustainability report and managed sustainability communications.As the airport's internal communications lead I launched a successful new intranet and monthly executive briefings and led diversity and inclusion activities. I also managed media issues and pitched stories.

Competenz is an industry training organisation. The Competenz team works with 3,500+ businesses in 37 industries across New Zealand, and helps 20,000+ people build their skills on the job. I led the communications and marketing insights functions, developing engagement tools and content that connected Competenz with industries, customers, learners and training partners across the country. I also launched and managed a customer research programme and two national thought leadership research projects which engaged customers and business partners and gained national media coverage. Got a trade, got it made!

Achievements I'm particularly proud of: supporting the ANZ/National Bank brand change (99% customer retention) and a win for our team (the International Association of Business Communicators' Golden Quill Award 2013) for managing communications and engagement on the merger; lifting staff engagement; managing communications to sell EFTPOS NZ.

This was a great job, working on two interesting, successful projects: Air New Zealand's involvement as official carrier to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and the company's Year 2000 project. These roles were hugely varied: I developed and managed project plans, managed stakeholders and project communications, represented the company on IATA and Star Alliance working groups and supported HR and operational activities.
