About Dr. Katharine Unger

Teaching Pre-K to Doctoral levels, Unger has led small programs and comprehensive high schools, is an educational designer, an award-winning researcher, and presenter for wide-ranging audiences. A conservatory-trained musician (Crane School of Music, Potsdam, NY); she holds a Masters equivalent in Music Education; a Masters in Educational Administration (St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY ); and an earned doctorate in Curriculum and Teaching, Educational Leadership (Teachers College, Columbia University). Her work, Teacher Professional Development and Transformative Learning in an Atmosphere of Urban Reform grew from research conducted in the School District of Philadelphia collaborating with the National Center for Restructuring Education, Schools and Teaching.As a professor, researcher, Executive Director of Educational Programs, TC Innovations, Teachers College, Columbia University, Dr. Unger created programs that took on lives of their own, attracting millions of dollars in grants and contracts. Unger taught vocal, instrumental, general, band, and choral music. A performer, conductor, director, producer, Director of Music Education and composer, she founded the 1000 Islands Community Theater & Center for the Performing Arts while co-founding the Jefferson County Council on the Arts. Her spiritual path includes Buddhism, Unitarian Universalism, and general interfaith studies.
