Leading core strategic programmes of work for the Process Engineering RTIO team, and ensuring the benefits are sustained into the future.I have been aligning stakeholders to work towards particular goals and ensure projects & programmes not only deliver value, but that deliver sustainable value and are integrated with business processes. While a certain amount of this work is expected in terms of governance setup, stakeholder engagement, status reporting & escalations, I found my excitement stemming from the design challenge of consolidating information into simple communication tools that highlighted how the work fit into the rest of the business.

This role has been focused on creating a sustainable and ingrained Management Operating System (MOS) within Rio Tinto Iron Ore. This role was focused on process optimisation and co-ordination, with linkages to all elements of business architecture to ensure sustainability and a design that was supported both by company leaders and front line staff. I was responsible for engaging with all levels of the business, applying Business Improvement principles and methodologies to business processes, and supporting departments to be able to embed and maintain process excellence through governance. By thoroughly embedding the design into RTIO, I helped to set clear expectations for operational leaders, add predictability and stability to their day, and ensure the day to day operations are carried out in a deliberate and systematic way. This role also helped to minimise threats to the MOS that can come about with staffing turnover, and from non-operational roles that need to interface with operations, by helping to bring awareness to operational routines and setting clear role expectations.

During my time in this role, I have been exploring opportunities to use new and existing technologies to optimise production and safety. Through this, I have led and been involved in projects that have delivered workload reduction initiatives (up to 200 controller hours/year), automated manual reporting (up to 243 controller hours/year) and standardisation projects. This role has also involved leading and supporting the delay accounting team. During this time, I have been reviewing their workload and priorities to ensure that the work they do helps to support business resilience. Areas of focus included upskilling team members, automating manual tasks, system improvement projects, and workload prioritisation.
