Project Research OfficerDepartment For Business, Energy And Industrial Strategy (Beis) Oct 2018 - Sep 2019London, United KingdomEO in the Environment, Rural Affairs and Space Team at the Government Office for Science. In my team I am responsible for horizon scanning and briefing in Climate Change, biodiversity and space. My time at GO-Science was mainly spent contributing to an evidence review on the state of Indoor Air Pollution, which included desk-based research and stakeholder engagement. The topics I was responsible for in this project included: sources of indoor air pollution in the home, trade offs between ventilation and energy efficiency, and international efforts to combat the issue. I have also led two separate projects from ideas to delivered products on biomass and biodiversity, and contributed to a project on the UK Food System. As well as project delivery I have also been heavily involved in writing briefs for Select Committees for the Government Chief Science Adviser on Planetary Health and other environmental issues. -
Phd StudentUniversity Of Leeds Sep 2014 - Sep 2018The main focus of my PhD project was to assess the chemical evolution of the Proterozoic ocean. This was carried out using aqueous-based mineral extractions (iron speciation) on ancient sediments coupled with major and trace metal analyses. I am fully trained in the use of AAS and ICP-OES. Another aspect of my research was to examine nutrient dynamics across this period by assessing phosphorus burial mechanisms in marine sediments, and linking ocean chemistry and biological evolution to the phosphorus cycle. This was similarly a lab-based topic, with aqueous mineral extractions as the main procedure used. I am also fully trained in spectrophotometers, LECO C-S analyser, thin section preparation and SEM analyses. As part of this research I have presented at many local and international conferences including Goldschmidt and Geological Society of America. I have played a large role in teaching to undergraduate students as part of time as a PhD student. I have taught on lab-based modules including: Geological Materials, Stratigraphy and Geological Maps, and Introduction to Geology. I have also been heavily involved in field teaching, with trips undertaken for environmental sciences, catchment processes and management, and geological maps. This summer I will also be involved in a research cruise to the Arctic for four weeks where I will assist the teams on board with geochemical measurements and sample taking from the seafloor. Undergraduate StudentTrinity College Dublin Sep 2010 - May 2014I received my BA in Earth Sciences (First Class Honours) from Trinity College Dublin. As part of this degree I undertook modules in both Geology and Geography disciplines including: Igneous Petrology, Glaciology, Palaeontology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geomorphology, Coastal processes and management, Quaternary geology, Sedimentology, and Palynology to name a few. I conducted a lab-based dissertation during my final year where I measured rare earth elements and the stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon in Palaeoproterozoic limestones to assess for evidence of ocean oxygenation. This project gave me a full background in clean room operations and training in the use of LA-ICP-MS. -
InternTullow Oil Jun 2013 - Aug 2013This was a three month internship in the Subsurface Technology Group at Tullow Oil in Dublin. My main responsibilities included:• Designing the user experience and training manuals for new software used for the visualization of sedimentalogical data from wells• Constructing a new database for academic papers to ensure process efficiency
