About Katherine Johnson

I am an academic leader in the Australian and UK Higher Education sector. I have 15 years experience in senior leadership and management roles in the social sciences, including Head of Discipline, Research Centre Director, Associate Dean, Research and Innovation, and most recently, Dean of School. I am an advocate for interdisciplinary research and educational experience and bring a values-based approach to leadership and management. I have extensive experience in organisational change including the establishment and merger of departments and centres, and in developing innovative curriculum and research agendas. My academic background is in community psychology and my research is the field of LGBTQ+ mental health, participatory, creative and visual research methods. I work in partnership with community organisations to improve policy, practice and lives. I am currently Executive Dean of a large school of applied humanities and social science at RMIT focused on social, environmental, criminal and global justice. I continue to work on research funded by Suicide Prevention Australia, ARC and NHMRC in topics related to LGBTQ+ intersectional experiences of suicide support, youth, sexuality and religion and nature-based interventions to reduce loneliness amongst refugees and asylum seekers.
