As a camp counselor with Neighborhood Focus, I guide ten 4th and 5th grade students and then later eight middle school girls through team building, educational activities, and good old-fashioned summer fun!

Transitioning from my role as North Village Assistant Area Coordinator with Housing & Residence Life, in the first half of the internship, I oversaw 14 RAs across campus while managing the data and residential experiences of the 528 summer students. For the second half of the internship, I supervised 22 RAs and3 student supervisors for the second year community of students on campus. This role included planning weekly staff meetings, managing resident and staff conflicts, coordinating logistics for office shifts, and working with Residence Life to unify our communication across campus.

I supervised 11 RAs with over 1000 junior and senior residents in our area. Through this position, I had experience in crisis management, supervision, and administration as I led our team to providing the best support to students as they transition into independent living and preparation for life after Furman.

I held study sessions, conversation spaces, and peer tutoring for students in the Modern Languages and Literatures Spanish division at Furman University.

Over the winter break of 2020, I became acquainted with and benefitted from daily mindfulness practice. Through the help of Health Science Professor Dr. Meghan Slining and Biology Professor Dr. Min-Ken Liao, I gained a greater understanding of the effect that the mind plays on the body and what I can do to engage my mind with the physical body. I started PalaMind as a student organization to give students a place to practice mindfulness individually with group support. We met twice a week to provide students with a quiet place to practice and pick up new tools. I guided one of these sits each week even as I continued myself to learn about and grow in my mindfulness practice.

As an Ambassador, I had the privilege of sharing Furman with prospective students in-person twice a week on tours and also virtually through the PALs program. My position allowed me to share my story and represent Furman from my own perspective as a student. I also helped facilitate the Furman Futures program which allows first year students at Furman the chance to get into Admissions and share their college search process with prospective students.

I worked with Furman's Center for Academic Success to provide group and individual peer tutoring in Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, and Political Thought.

I digitized hard copies of historical media for the use of students, professors, and the community at large, oftentimes using the Adobe suite to complete my tasks.

As an RA for Housing and Residence Life, I oversee 72 juniors and seniors in an on-campus apartment setting. I plan large group social events, facilitate conflict resolution scenarios, act as a resource for all things campus life, and make personal investments into the lives of my residents.

Through Furman's Institute for the Advancement of Community Health in partnership with Prisma Health, I participated in the Fall 2021 Student Observership program, observing in clinical rotations with OB/GYN, Anesthesiology, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Vascular Surgery, General Surgery, and Neurosurgery. The Observership experience gave me insight into how the different medical specialties contribute to our healthcare system and where I might see myself best fitting into the plan of care for patients in our systems.

I live and work with 105 freshmen students to whom I as a Housing and Residents team member provide academic mentoring, connections to campus resources, and community-building activities.

Working with Dr. Pamela Hanson in the Biology department, I spent 320 hours analyzing variants of the gene RPL5 and modeled isoforms of potentially cancerous mutations, collaborating with my lab group digitally through Zoom and Microsoft Teams, and compiling, managing, and analyzing large datasets in Excel.

I was honored to be a part of FPEP and engage with students at Perry Correctional Institute through letter exchanges, virtual book clubs, simultaneous 5K's, and even taking classes at Perry. FPEP changed my perspective on incarceration in ways I did not expect and has grown in me a commitment to sharing the voices of the incarcerated with others. My role in FPEP was event coordination which gives FPEP the chance to partner with local organizations, and even state level bodies like the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

As a member of the Tocqueville Society, I engaged with scholars and other Fellows in discussions of political thought and the Great Books. In addition to my role as a Fellow, I was the Chief Symposiarch for the Politics and the Good Life Engaged Living Program through Furman. In this position, I facilitated small group discussions of political thought and other literature such as poetry outside of the classroom in social situations conducive for question-asking and the bonds of friendship.

Trained as a medical scribe across all specialties using an online, AI-assisted platform.

During the summer of 2022, I had the opportunity to work with interns from across the world as a public health intern with Tibetan communities in Pokhara, Nepal funded through the Furman University Freeman Fellowship. In my role, I had the responsibility to both plan for and teach lesson materials centered around relevant public health issues for groups of various ages from children in local schools to elderly women gathered together to learn. This experience changed the way I look at public health education and gave me new tools to use to teach about healthcare topics in the future.

Supporting Spanish-speaking students in learning English through bilingual teaching techniques and conversational strategies

MedEx Tier III provided myself and 40 other pre-health students the opportunity to be a part of healthcare in a variety of ways. I explored over a dozen medical specialties through lectures and clinical opportunities, investigated root causes of health issues within a variety of identity groups in the community, and improved basic medical skills through the USC School of Medicine Greenville.

Historic Johnson Farm is one of three farms in the US owned and operated by a public school system. In working for the farm, I spent over 300 hours designing and implementing plant science curriculum for over six hundred students ages 3-18, creating five different types of garden spaces to begin a farm-to-table sustainable system for Henderson County Public Schools, and translating farm physical and digital media into Spanish to promote accessibility.

Since being accepted as a Fellow, I have collaborated with another fellow to teach a class of 16 first grade students community responsibility, supervised and volunteered for an after school program for low-income students of ages 5-15, and discovered personal strengths and how to apply them in the context of leadership. For my Sophomore Year Leadership Challenge Project, I have partnered with OpenFields Consulting and the Furman Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship to map out non-profits in Greenville in order to determine how resources in our community are being allocated and might be more efficiently put to work. We then used what we had learned about entrepreneurship to walk through a pitch process for an innovative idea for Furman's campus. That idea became a reality when we partnered with the Computer Science Department at Furman to create the app based on the data had collected. My role continues past my time in Shucker as the marketing head of the app, Furman Now! which is available on Google Play and the App Store.

Along with a team of 5 other staff members, I facilitated daily activities outside of the classroom for 30 high school students, resolved camp life conflict including interpersonal tension and health concerns, and critiqued the students in case writing and competition.

I designed a debate curriculum for 26 students of all ages and experience levels, trained students in Lincoln-Douglas Debate for 8 hours a day, and directed a debate tournament to showcase students’ skills.
