Multiplatform Editor, News

Current

Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States

I am on a team of multiplatform copy editors who nightly form the final line of defense against errors before the paper is printed and delivered the next morning. I edit stories of all lengths and complexities in our national and state news sections and business section for digital and print publication. When I edit, I am looking for AP and house styles, spelling, grammar and factual errors, sentence structure and the general flow of the story. I write headlines and cutlines to spec for print, and this year won a statewide award for headline writing. I am a great lover of puns — when appropriate, of course.

May 2021 - Present

Columnist

Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States

I wrote the "Afraid to Ask" column for the quarterly Star Tribune Magazine, answering "embarrassing" questions with the help of Minnesota-based experts.

Dec 2021 - Jun 2022

Producer, Mpr News With Angela Davis

I was a producer for the 11 a.m. hour on MPR News, 91.1 FM, hosted by Angela Davis. I was part of a small team responsible for developing segment ideas, booking and pre-interviewing guests and preparing the host for the daily live broadcast, along with all the other tasks needed to get a talk show on the air and online every day. The show was Minnesota-focused and we covered the murder of George Floyd and the ensuing unrest extensively.

Feb 2020 - Apr 2021

Senior Editor | Rewire

Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area

I was a member of the founding team of Rewire.org, a national, PBS-funded website for adults in their 20s and 30s based at Twin Cities PBS. I was the editor and a writer for the daily digital publication — everything on the site was either edited or written by me. I also hired and managed a team of freelance writers across the country that contributed to Rewire, and helped mold the editorial voice and direction of the publication.Rewire provides trusted life-stage content in the subject areas of relationships, mental health, work, lifestyle and civic engagement, and reframes PBS content to make it relevant to a younger demographic. It also produces two web series for PBS Digital Studios, "Sound Field" and "America From Scratch." I have researched and written episodes for both series. One episode I wrote for "Sound Field," "The Sound of NYC's Underground Vogue Scene," won a Webby Award in 2020.I hosted and co-produced "30-Second Minnesota," a Twin Cities PBS webseries nominated for an Upper Midwest Regional Emmy. I also produced a short web episode about Minnesota's LGBTQ history through a grant from PBS in collaboration with PBS series "Retro Report."

Oct 2016 - Feb 2020

Production Assistant | Almanac

I was a member of the small team that produces Twin Cities PBS's longstanding weekly Minnesota news and public affairs program, "Almanac," which has been on the air for more than 30 years. In the week leading up to each live show on Friday evenings, I tracked state and regional news, pitched segment and story ideas and pre-interviewed and booked guests, among all the many little things that go into putting on a weekly live television show. I also did a little reporting and video editing (in Premiere Pro) for the show. On the night of, I helped direct the live program, as well as its sister program, "Almanac at the Capitol," as an associate director. I helped produce and provided the talent for the webseries "30-Second Minnesota," which was nominated for an Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Award in the Informational category.Separate from my journalistic duties in the Almanac world, I worked on a history documentary about the St. Paul Winter Carnival, "The Legendary Saint Paul Winter Carnival." For that project, I developed relationships with sources, scheduled and produced shoots, did research and collected and organized archival footage and photographs, among many other tasks. The documentary won an Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Award in the History Documentary category.I also worked on a history documentary about Minnesota's LGBTQ community, "Out North," as a field producer, conducting on-camera interviews with LGBTQ trailblazers Rep. Karen Clark and Susan Kimberly.
