JournalismI am an award-winning freelance journalist, and specialise in covering music, theatre and digital technologies. My by-lines include reviews, features and profiles for publications including The Guardian, The Scotsman, CRACK, Fest, The Stage and The Observer, and a selection of recent work can be found at www.katiehawthorne.net. I have also been a nominator and/or judge for awards such as the SAY Award, the SAMAs, the Scotsman Fringe Firsts and the BRIT Awards.RadioI produce and co-host the Culture Show on EHFM, Edinburgh's independent radio station. As the producer I book interviews with a wide variety of Edinburgh's cultural figures (recent guests include Lighthouse Books, Rabindranath X Bhose, Post Coal Prom Queen, Alycia Pirmohamed, and the cast of National Theatre of Scotland's Thrown), and I record and edit the programme for broadcast. I present the show with co-host Katie Goh. I have also been a guest on BBC Scotland and BBC Introducing.

Funded by the Wolfson Foundation, I have been researching a PhD in European Theatre since 2016. My thesis explores the changing nature of 'liveness' in theatres in Edinburgh and Berlin between 2017-2019, from the rise of the live-streaming industry, to app-based performances and robotic performers. I argue for the use of three terms - digital distribution, digital mediation and digital location - to create a more nuanced discussion about the theatre industry and the digital. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, I have shared my research in The Guardian and The Stage, and used Twitter to provide help to 60+ theatres and theatre makers interested in 'going digital'. I have presented research at the International Brecht Symposium (2016), Edinburgh University's German Research Seminar (2017), the International Federation for Theatre Research (Shanghai, 2019) and at the UK's Theatre and Performance Research Association (2019). In 2021 I will begin a fellowship at the Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund.
