I am a researcher and a consultant specializing in online harassment and content moderation. Using data science, UX, and (organizational and social media) ethnography, I examine and develop solutions for policy, design and enforcement challenges that social media companies face in mitigating and understanding online harassment and other challenges in online moderation.I'm currently Content Moderation Lead for Meedan and a visiting researcher at UC Irvine in the Department of Informatics, studying emerging forms of community formation, norm development and maintenance, and moderation in online platforms. Much of this work is in support of technology-supported collective action for marginal and underserved communities. I advise civil rights, mental health, and online safety organizations in matters of online harassment defense, educational resources, and online community health.I also dedicate time to increase diversity in STEM fields. I want to make the professional and recreational cultures surrounding tech fields more inclusive for underrepresented folks, and to inspire them to pursue careers in developing technologies.I also endlessly work on producing YouTube videos for Hbomberguy and occasionally other channels.
