Katie Merrill McLemore is the Founder and Executive Director of Camp Bethesda. Camp Bethesda is dedicated to meeting the emotional, psycho-social, psychological and spiritual needs for children by providing a Christian atmosphere and therapeutic activities for kids with Congenital Heart Disease. Our hope is that a child who comes to Camp Bethesda will leave with a smile on their face, new friends in their life, and peace and healing in their heart. Katie attended Texas Woman’s University from 2006 through 2009 and graduated with her bachelor’s in Childhood Development with an emphasis in Child Life. She has since gone on to work in several different positions within the childcare field. While attending high school and college, Katie worked at two different camps during her summers for kids of all ages who were either mental or physically challenge. There, she fell in love with summer camps. After working a total of five summers at camp, Katie knew in her heart that she one day wanted to start her very own camp for children with Congenital Heart Disease. Born with multiple congenital heart defects, Katie had her first heart surgery when she was only four days old. Multiple surgeries later, Katie had a stroke following a procedure at the age of three. The doctors informed her parents that she would never talk or walk again. Thankfully, they were wrong. She went on to have two open-heart surgeries with the last one when she was 13 years old. Many catheterizations,, doctor appointments and scans later, Katie is a healthy and vibrant young professional.At the age of 27, Katie is making her dream a reality.
