I'm a freelance general rounds reporter at SBS World News in Sydney. My role involves researching, writing, and presenting stories that go to air in our evening TV news bulletins. I'm required to arrange interviews, work with the camera operators to ensure the appropriate visual elements are filmed, and liaise with producers, graphic designers and animators. As a reporter, you’re expected to manage your time effectively and ensure the accuracy of your stories and live crosses.

My role within the marketing department was wide and varied, but I mainly focused on content creation to support our digital marketing strategy. I was responsible for researching and writing customer case studies, blog articles, website text, and social media posts. I worked extensively on company video productions featuring customer case studies and other examples of how our products could be used. Several times a year I would ghostwrite articles for various company heads that were published in industry magazines/websites. In addition to this, I was the proofreader and copyeditor overseeing the written content produced by others in the department. I also contributed to general marketing initiatives such as product launches, branding, and advertising campaigns.

Brisbane

I worked for Nine News in Brisbane across all the daytime and evening TV news bulletins. As with the other reporting roles, I was responsible for researching and writing my stories and presenting them in both live and pre-recorded formats. I was regularly doing live crosses from the field into the morning and afternoon national news bulletins, as well as the evening news for Queensland. This was an incredibly fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and an expectation for accuracy, reliability, and consistency. As a reporter, I worked closely with camera operators on the road, and editors and producers back at the studio.

Similar to my other TV reporting roles, I was responsible for producing, writing, and presenting news packages for the evening bulletin. During my time with NBN, I anchored the news on a casual basis and read updates throughout the day. At the time, reporters were responsible for uploading their TV stories to the web and writing additional content for the digital platforms. In addition to my reporting role, I periodically produced the regional news bulletins which involved overseeing junior reporters and subediting their work. During my time with NBN I also anchored the evening bulletins on a casual basis and read live news updates throughout the day. Additionally, I was responsible for uploading my story content to the company’s website and managing the work of junior journalists in our regional markets.

While working at 2GB, I divided my time between reporting on the road and reading news bulletins in the studio. While on the road, journalists would attend press conferences and other breaking news stories and file reports for the hourly bulletins. When in the newsroom, the reporters would write scripts, conduct interviews, and help prepare the bulletins. It was an exciting and fast-paced job with very tight deadlines.

This was my first media job after university. I wrote and presented news bulletins every 30 minutes for the breakfast program, interacted with the on-air presenters as part of various segments, and occasionally filed stories from the road.
