As a Pediatric Cardiology scribe for the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Children’s Specialists – Cardiology medical group, I was responsible for documenting patient care on behalf of the pediatric cardiologist in both inpatient and outpatient settings. I also trained new scribes and even observed a cardiologist cure a person’s arrhythmia during a cardiac electrophysiology study. My time as a scribe taught me much about the dynamic interplay between all the roles responsible for patient care: from the medical assistants who ran clinic efficiently, to the sonographers who obtained the echocardiograms, to the cardiologists who synthesized all the data to make informed decisions. ESCAPE is a 27-hour non-denominational retreat program for freshmen, whose goal was to put students in touch with their most authentic selves. As Student Coordinator, I organized and managed the logistics of 28 retreats, as well as peer mentored 84 student leaders, listening as they courageously shared their own stories. Although it was not always easy, it was always rewarding.
