Dr. Johnson’s Lab- James Chhor: Effects of Microplastic Exposure on Growth and Survival of Larval California Grunion"The experiment compared effects of virgin and environmentally exposed microplastics, effects of leachate from virgin and environmentally exposed microplastics, and tested for effects of different concentrations. Immediately after hatching, larvae were exposed for 10 days to nine different treatments that compared the effects of microplastic and leachate exposures made from virgin and environmentally exposed high-density polyethylene pellets (HDPE) at two concentrations. Conclusion: Survival, feeding rates, and routine swimming speed did not vary significantly between any of the treatments. In both cases, the results were unaffected by concentration and unaffected by whether the microplastics and leachate originated from virgin or environmentally exposed HDPE. The results suggest that virgin and environmentally exposed HDPE, and their associated leachates, may have negative effects on the growth and development of larval fishes.
