Kathleen Wirt has owned and operated the legendary 4th Street Recording studio in Santa Monica, California since 1989, and has been the sole owner since 2001.In the early years, Kathleen offered spec deals to certain artists, starting with Fiona Apple, whose recording of “Shadowboxer” became the first single on her Grammy-nominated multi-platinum album “Tidal.” Next came Incubus, Alien Ant Farm, Hoobastank, The Neighbourhood, all to become platinum-selling artists. Kathleen graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in English from Missouri State University. She put herself through college by waiting tables, an experience she credits with giving her a special insight into helping people feel comfortable and happy. After graduating, Kathleen spent two years as a Program Coordinator for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, as the Producer of the Joplin, Missouri Jerry Lewis Telethon. then relocated to Los Angeles work as the line producer for the LA MDA Telethon. Kathleen left MDA to study the Meisner technique with Wayne Dvorak and enjoyed a brief career as a comedic actress. As a Music Consultant for United Way, she produced events including a party for Gloria Estefan, and recruited No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani as a spokesperson for Recording Artists Against Drunk Driving. From 1997 to 2005, Kathleen hosted a monthly salon at her home in Venice, the Albert Hofmann Friday Night Dinners, where Allen Ginsburg read his poetry and the intelligentsia of the psychedelic community gathered to discuss everything related to the study of human consciousness. As a co-founder and administrator of Rave The Vote, Kathleen manned a booth at EDM festivals where she registered hundreds of new voters, and helped mobilized a volunteer force to work on political campaigns. When Kathleen became the sole owner of the studio in 2001, she created and, with producer Stefan Broadley, hosted "Represent:US", a series of socially conscious hip-hop freestyle nights. The studio also partners with Bryonn Bain's Justice Project, recording graduates of its prison writing classes. Kathleen also supports young talent through her studio’s internship program, which has launched many a career. As a member of the Los Angeles Committee of Women In Music, she takes a special interest in promoting the careers of women in production. She also seeks toempower female artists in all-male control rooms with an annual event she created and produces at The Village for WIM called “Shoptalk,” where they can ask women producers/engineers questions about production basics and terminology.
