About Kathleen Dollard
I’ve been lucky to be part of the expansion of the software industry over the last few decades. Software helps people do their job better, can engage and delight, and frees up time. Creating software is deeply collaborative, allowing programmers to learn and grow – technically, professionally and personally. Designing software plays a critical role in organizations and businesses understanding and solving their problems. None of this is easy. My passion is helping those I touch do it better and constantly getting better myself.I’m an expert in C#, .NET and ASP.NET, SQL Server and Visual Basic. I have also worked with or led teams using Python, AWS SNS (Simple Notification Service), GraphQL, React, node.js, WebForms, WinForms and many others. I’ve created evolutionary architectures. My book “Code Generation in Microsoft .NET” put forth principles of metaprogramming still valid today. As functional techniques became widely available, I simplified my architectures by combining traditional inheritance and generic techniques with functional approaches. This greatly limits semi-redundant code, which allows minimal generation if desired. I have a soft spot for legacy code. Dead code should be hunted down and removed as a threat to the stability and security of production systems. But, other code in production is there because it does a job. Stabilizing these systems in a world of changing security and business needs is hard and important.I code, I teach, I speak, I write, I author videos, I mentor. I want to see more great software! While I’m a good coder and love to code, I accomplish more when I empower others. Teaching a concept, inspiring, or solving a design or technical problem - one of the greatest feelings is seeing “the light go on” in someone’s understanding.
