About Kathleen Sheehan

Kathleen has served as Vice President of Public Policy for the ALS Association since December of 2016. In this role, Kathleen and her three-person team are responsible for advocating with Congress and policy makers to provide more funding for ALS research across several federal agencies including the Department of Defense ALS research program, the National Institutes of Health and the National ALS Registry and Biorepository at CDC. Kathleen also advocates for Congress to pass laws to improve the quality of life for people living with ALS and their families. For example, Kathleen successfully convinced Congress to ensure that people with ALS who qualified for SSDI are immediately eligible for Medicare and to ensure protections and access to health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. Kathleen also leads special projects such as winning congressional support and funding for the National Academies study: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: Accelerating Treatments and Improving Quality of Life. Most recently, Kathleen has been responsible for working with physicians to lobby CMS to stop some Medicare Advantage plans from delaying, substituting equipment and denying non-invasive ventilators for people with ALS who require life support. Prior to coming to the ALS Association, Kathleen held senior level positions at the American Academy of Cardiology, the Visiting Nurse Associations, the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems and the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors.

    The ALS Association is the only national non-profit organization fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease on every front. Its mission is to lead the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy, while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families to live fuller lives. The Association works closely with its network of chapters that provide comprehensive patient services and support to the ALS community. The Association’s network plays a lead role in advocating for increased public and private support of ALS research and public policy initiatives that responds to the needs of people with ALS. Its efforts have raised the profile of ALS at the White House, among members of Congress, and within federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Food and Drug Administration, Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, Social Security Administration, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Public Policy accomplishments include: • Eliminated the 24-month waiting period that people disabled with ALS had to endure before they could start receiving Medicare benefits. • Enacted the ALS Registry Act to establish the first nationwide ALS patient registry administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. • Advocated for historic regulations at the Department of Veterans Affairs that designate ALS as a service connected disease. Veterans with ALS and their survivors are now eligible for full health and disability benefits, regardless of where or when they served in the military and regardless of how soon after discharge they were diagnosed.
