Katie is passionate about the intersection of behavioral psychology and the development of regional and local food systems. She worked as an organic farmer for 6 years, first in New York, then in Columbus, Ohio where she founded and managed a 50-member Community Supported Agriculture program. She has gained extensive experience and knowledge in sustainable agricultural methods, retail marketing of organic produce, customer relations, and managing a small-scale business. She received her BA in Environmental Policy from Barnard College of Columbia University in 2016, where she completed her undergraduate thesis on the effects of nutrition education and farm-to-school programming on New York City elementary school students' perceptions of school lunch. She received her Master's degree in behavioral psychology at the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability, where she wrote a book on Farm Stops: grocery stores that prioritize sourcing local products and operate on consignment to better support the farmers they work with. This book highlights how to develop a Farm Stop, and is accompanied by a report detailing how Farm Stops strengthen local and regional food systems (links listed on this page). Lastly, Katie received a certificate in integrative nutritional health coaching from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in 2022. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, studying medicinal herbalism, cooking, and practicing yoga.
