The Reiter Lab uses both animal models (Drosophila) and patient derived stem cells (dental pulp stem cells) to investigate and understand the basic underpinnings of neurogenetic disorders on the autism spectrum. These disorders include several chromosome 15q syndromes with a focus on Duplication 15q and Prader-Willi syndrome. Given the opportunity to conduct experiments for graduate/post doctorate students including: - Cell culture differentiation, flask splitting, cell line maintenance and creation with donated baby teeth for the DPSC side.- Fly collection, fly cross breeding, assistance with western blotting, directional vector cloning for the Drosophila sideMaintained upkeep for both lab sides through:- Permanent fly stock maintenance and making fly food each week - Generation of cell culture media and calculations for reagents used to differentiate cells- Ordering supplies and facilitating biohazard waste removal

Dr. Hill’s research deals with the genetic determinants of growth and division in fungal cells. Areas of interest are the identification of proteins participating in construction and constriction of actomyosin rings at division sites and the molecular basis for targeting of proteins to their sites of action in the cell of the filamentous fungus, Aspergillus nidulans. - Investigated protein-protein interactions in fungi via generating and characterizing mutant strains that have defects in cell growth or division- Gathered and used mutant strain data to predict the mechanisms underlying these growth processes - Gained techniques of DNA manipulation, collection, and replication regarding fungi like fusion PCR, Bimolecular fluorescence complementation, fungal transformations, plasmid construction.- Gained experience using lab precautions and equipment handling.- Advised, trained, and oversaw work of three junior assistants in their lab protocols and independent projects.
