About Kathryn Powers
As an undergraduate at Trinity College, I joined Dr. Daniel Blackburn’s lab and worked as a research assistant. I identified a mechanism for yolk nutrient mobilization in reptiles that is vastly different from the avian pattern which was assumed to be highly conserved. It was here that I discovered my passion for the iterative process of analyzing outcomes and incorporating insights into research endeavors. Upon my graduation, I joined the lab of Drs. Elizabeth Eipper and Richard Mains at the University of Connecticut Health Center as a research technician. While studying the role of peptidylglycine alpha-amidating monooxygenase in peptidergic signaling, I built on the skills in microdissections and imaging that I developed during my undergraduate work. I gained mastery of techniques commonly used in cellular and molecular research, including mouse husbandry, cell culture, and immunolabeling. In 2020, I joined the Molecular and Cellular Biology PhD program at the University of Washington. In my search for a thesis lab, I met Dr. Olivia Bermingham-McDonogh and was captivated by her inner ear research. We designed a thesis project that balances my passions for development and neuroscience. My research focuses on the role of a transcriptional regulator critical in cochlear development and will provide insight into a new target for sensory cell regeneration. I am eager to apply my research experiences towards the design of regenerative therapeutics that will improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from degenerative conditions like sensorineural hearing loss.https://sites.uw.edu/oliviab/
