I write academic manuscripts, grant proposals and technical reports for academic and non-profit conservation science organizations, as well as essays, feature length, and short articles for newspapers and magazines, covering a broad range of science issues. Helping non-profit organizations maximize short and long-term fundraising capacity, identifying goals and key funders as well as implementing marketing and design (writing copy, graphic design, web design) efforts necessary to reach these target audiences.

Leading the communications work of the WCS Climate Adaptation Fund, I worked to help conservation practitioners better understand the funding priorities of this National grants program specifically and used these stories to share innovative, on-the-ground climate adaptation actions more broadly. Along with a team of climate scientists, I lead an annual strategic communications planning process and then carry out the specific work identified, including using specific metrics for effectiveness. The products developed included writing and producing short films, writing popular press pieces and scientific manuscripts and designing print materials.I also co-managed this National grant-making program that supports non-profit organizations to carry out innovative, on-the-ground actions for climate adaptation at a landscape scale. During my tenure, we awarded 41 grants totaling $7,041,202. Working Dogs for Conservation (WDC) is a non-profit organization putting the keen canine nose to work to help endangered species in some of the most stunning places around the world. WDC trains dogs utilizing techniques similar to those used in search and rescue, narcotic, and cadaver detection disciplines, using scent to locate specific wildlife scats, live animals and plants. When combined with technologies available for the analysis of DNA extracted from scat, scientists can verify species, sex, and potentially determine population size, home range, paternity, and kinship while the analysis of endocrine extracted from scat can determine the reproductive status of individuals. As leaders in the field, WDC has worked with more than 30 conservation groups in 5 different countries on projects for 20 species of wild animals and plants. Many of these projects have been ground-breaking within the field of conservation biology. To boot, many of our specially trained dogs are rescued from shelters or frustrated owners, thus we save dogs that in turn help save wild life and wild places.
