About Kathryn Ware
I am currently a PhD candidate in Ecology and Conservation Biology at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, where my dissertation focuses on how bird communities respond to various types of disturbances, including hurricanes, forest management, and window collisions. I will be graduating in May 2026. My career goal is to be involved with conservation planning and inform land managers and agencies on how to best conserve bird populations and bird habitat. I received my masters degree in Biological Sciences from Bowling Green State University where I researched breeding bird communities in introduced, fragmented pine plantations in the Oak Openings Region in Northwest Ohio. I am also the current Graduate Student Representative to the Bowling Green State University Board of Trustees.I am passionate about collaborating with other entities to forward bird conservation and I actively work with Metroparks Toledo in my research so that I am able to make management recommendations to benefit breeding bird communities. I have designed my own research projects and I regularly utilize R, ArcGIS, Maxent, JMP, Microsoft Office, and Google Earth, in addition to doing bird point count surveys. Outside of academia, I am an active volunteer with Black Swamp Bird Observatory, a non-profit organization in Northwest Ohio, where I volunteer as a birding festival guide and volunteer, and advisor to the Northwest Chapter of the Ohio Young Birder's Club. I am also a volunteer banding technician for both the Black Swamp Bird Observatory migratory bird banding station on the shores of Lake Erie and the MAPS banding station in Oak Openings Preserve Metropark in Northwest Ohio.
