About Kathryn H. Ching, Ph.D.

I am a molecular biologist with over 15 years of experience in academia and the pharmaceutical industry dedicated to the development of better diagnostics and treatments for human disease. At the National Institutes of Health (NIDCR), I designed and built immunoassays for a novel luminescent platform to quantitatively measure disease-specific serological markers in cancer and autoimmune disease. The platform, Luciferase Immunoprecipitation Systems (LIPS), has been used extensively by researchers across the NIH and by external partners. Over 60 peer-reviewed publications describe its use. At Crystal Bioscience, I contributed to the design, development and characterization of a humanized chicken for therapeutic antibody discovery. The OmniChicken™ and Crystal Bioscience, Inc. were acquired by Ligand Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in 2017. In 2021, I joined NextVivo, a seed-stage company founded by Stanford University professors Mark Davis and Calvin Kuo and backed by Khosla Ventures. As an Associate Director at NextVivo, I led a team of scientists using patient derived organoids to develop personalized cell therapies and antibody therapeutics.

  • Nextvivo
    Associate Director
    Nextvivo Jan 2024 - Present
    Palo Alto, California, United States
NextVivo was founded in 2021 based on work by Stanford professors Calvin Kuo and Mark Davis with the aim of using patient-derived organoids (PDOs) to develop the next generation of cell therapies and immunotherapies. PDOs grown on an air-liquid interface (ALI), developed in the Kuo lab, recapitulate the complete tumor microenvironment and will allow us to selectively enrich and reinvigorate tumor specific T cells.
