Her work has spawned several start-up companies and generated >60 issued patents. Uhrich has authored ~180 peer-reviewed articles and generated ~$30 million in federal and corporate funding. She’s impassioned about mentoring the next generation of scientists, as reflected by her research team: ~60 graduate and ~90 undergraduate students, and ~30 visiting scientists from around the globe.Uhrich’s scholarly and entrepreneurial achievements are highlighted by her election as Fellow into the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, Controlled Release Society, and National Academy of Inventors.

Dr. Kathryn Uhrich was the longest serving Dean of the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) at University of California, Riverside in over forty years. She oversaw a research and teaching enterprise comprising nearly 1000 faculty, staff and researchers, and >8,000 undergraduate and graduate students in 13 academic departments. She also oversaw ~30,000 acres of Natural Reserves, ~1000 acres of Agricultural Operations, and the Botanic Gardens. Uhrich managed ~$110M in operational budget and raised >$100M in philanthropic gifts.

In January 2014, I worked closely with the founding editor, Ray Ottenbrite (retired, VCU) who started JBC in January 1986. My first priority was to move the submission, reviewing and editing processes on-line; the publication process needed to be more transparent and more efficient for authors, reviewers and editors. My next priorities are to: enable our articles to be MedLine-searchable, ii) revise and streamline the editorial board structure, and iii) ensure that our editorial board reflects the diversity of our authors and readers.

Our research is in the design, synthesis and characterization of biocompatible, biodegradable polymers for medical, dental, cosmetic and food applications. My research group has published hundreds of peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, conference proceedings and patents. The young scientists and engineers whom I've mentored is diverse: the PhD students are from Chemistry, Chemical Eng., Biomedical Eng. or Pharmaceutics departments, and the undergraduate students have majors ranging from chemistry to molecular biology to business. My lab has hosted visiting scientists from across the globe as well as from NJ high schools. Our successful, innovative and collaborative research directly results from our excellent research team.

As Dean of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) at Rutgers, my major goal was to facilitate building a new chemistry/science building to grow science in NJ. My other goals were to: Increase collaboration/interactions and transparency with faculty; Reduce gradate student tuition; and Enhance visibility of department chair as academic leaders. Serving around 300 faculty, I developed programs to increase research and teaching collaborations, increased extramural funding, and led the campaign for a $100M science building.
