Dr Kathy Russell is a fluvial geomorphologist, working on the impacts of urbanization on stream physical form and function. Her research interests include the sediment supply and transport regime of urban streams, sediment pollution produced by construction areas, prediction of stream channel adjustment to urban conditions and the provision of freedom space for urban streams to exhibit healthy dynamic behavior and engage their floodplains.

Phd StudentThe University Of Melbourne Mar 2015 - Feb 2019Burnley CampusResearch Project: “Geomorphic opportunities and constraints to urban stream functional restoration”Flow regime disturbance has long been recognised as a key driver of physical and ecological degradation of streams downstream of urban development. Morphologic change in waterways, however, is also driven by changes in the sediment regime, particularly the bedload (coarse-grained) sediment regime. However, the extent of this disturbance and its relative contribution to urban stream degradation is unknown. Sediment regime disturbance may be an ongoing constraint to urban stream protection or restoration, even if the natural hydrologic regime can be preserved or restored. This project investigates changes in bedload supply and transport in streams across a gradient of urbanisation, the subsequent impacts on geomorphological change and habitat degradation, and the constraints they place on protection, recovery and restoration of urban streams. -
