Led the Lights Out Texas initiative in Houston, receiving pledges from over 40 privately managed high-rise buildings and promoting the incorporation of Lights Out Texas in the City of Houston’s Building Decarbonization Policy announced April 2022. Established partnerships with city governments and organizations including the City of Katy, the City of League City, Texas Master Naturalists, and Nature Heritage Society to create inviting habitat and limit threats to wildlife through collaborative conservation strategies. Managed 18 monthly bird surveys across the Houston-Galveston region and organized annual community science events including City Nature Challenge and Great Backyard Bird Count. Spearheaded the establishment of Houston Audubon’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging committee.

Identified and evaluated loggerhead and green sea turtle nests, collected and maintained data, and monitored the nests daily for threats (i.e. predation, erosion) or hatchling activity. Mapped sand dune erosion in ArcMap through photo monitoring and GPS surveys, determining the areas to be designated as conservation zones to reduce further erosion. Identified and removed invasive plants including Salsola tragus (Russian thistle), Schinus terebinthifolia (Brazilian pepper), and Kalanchoe sp. using physical tools and herbicide. Conducted weekly shorebird surveys for nesting least tern and Wilson’s plover and submitted data to the Florida Shorebird Database. Managed threatened and endangered species within the park by restoring and maintaining habitat for the endangered Anastasia Island beach mouse and repairing barriers preventing vehicle collisions with Florida state-designated threatened gopher tortoises. Educated visitors through in-person and virtually recorded presentations on the natural resources found at Fort Matanzas National Monument.This was a Stewards Individual Placement Program internship position through the National Park Service’s Scientists in Parks (SIP) Program in partnership with AmeriCorps and The Geological Society of America.
