In my role as Deputy Head of Boarding, I am responsible for the care, welfare, academic oversight, development and guidance of our boarding students whilst also ensuring the operations and strategic goals of the Boarding House are met. Providing pastoral care and academic support as well, this role plays an important part in creating a positive and supportive “home away from home” experience. The Deputy Head of Boarding is also responsible for organising the weekend activities and risk assessments associated with this.

In my role as Head of Boarding I am responsible for developing, planning and leading the implementation of the Girl Academy’s Boarding program and the safety and health and wellbeing of students. This role is part of the Senior Leadership team.The Girl Academy is the first school of its kind in Australia, providing an opportunity for young Indigenous mothers, with their babies to finish high school in a Boarding School environment, with their babies. Other Indigenous girls who have been disengaged from formal schooling also attend.Girl Academy students graduate with an education and the confidence to be the best they can be as individuals, as valued members of their community and as future leaders.The Girl Academy is based at Wangetti, approximately 40kms north of Cairns. It is located in a peaceful bush setting.The idea for the Academy came about from conversations between the Cape York Partnership with Cape York women who wanted something more for their disenfranchised daughters. The direction of the Academy is guided by Aboriginal women, including our students. This way the cultural,spiritual, educational and physical needs of our young women are met.

I have over ten years’ experience working with adolescents in a residential setting.My past role as Deputy Director of Boarding at St John’s Catholic College in Darwin required me to work in matters relating to the management and leadership of the Boarding School. I was also responsible for providing direction and advice to staff and students in the development of a high quality home environment with ultimate care to students that are attending the College to fulfil their educational needs, giving special attention to cross cultural diversity, sensitivity and protocol.My role involves interacting with families, demonstrating to the College community, leadership qualities, providing professional guidance and empowerment to staff and students as appropriate. My role involves attending, and contributing to Pastoral care meetings. I work closely with the Student Wellbeing Team (School Counselors, School Nurse and Year Coordinators) to ensure that the emotional and social wellbeing of the boarders was met.St John's Catholic College caters for students from all parts of the Northern Territory. Many of these students are from remote communities. St John's also caters for international students from West Papua, Malaysia, Indonesia and the sub Continent which enhances the diversity of St John's College.

In my role as Senior Project Officer I assisted in managing health programs and coordinating projects, acting as a conduit between service providers and the health programs team. I was responsible for developing engagement strategies focussed on primary health care with a particular emphasis on improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.I have established partnerships with mainstream medical practices to provide health checks to students at the Clontarf Football Academy. This required negotiation between the Aboriginal Medical Service, mainstream medical clinics and the Academy.I facilitated working groups, which consisted of experts in their fields and Aboriginal Health Practitioners to develop Access Language tools to assist in language barriers with Aboriginal people regarding their chronic health conditions. These talking posters are a communication tool to contribute to Closing the Gap in the life expectancy by improving access to culturally sensitive primary care services and improve health literacy.I was also part of the team which developed the 715 Media Campaign. The media campaign was developed to inform Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people about the importance of, and the options available for accessing the Indigenous Health check. The campaign includes TV and radio advertisements, a TV documentary, brochures and a campaign website.

In my role as Community Engagement and Relations Specialist and Employment and Workforce Development Coordinator my work involved working with Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders to develop and implement programs and strategies to support sustainable social, economic participation and environmental development of the Strategic Indigenous Housing Infrastructure Program (SIHIP).This involved conducting initial community visits to assist in the timely delivery of SIHIP funded housing through appropriate communication, engagement with Aboriginal stakeholders in Community, and other internal and external key stakeholders.My role involved facilitating smooth interactions between Construction teams, Community and Government stakeholders and developing Cultural competence and coordinating Cross Cultural Awareness training. I was responsible for the recruitment and employment of local Indigenous people. This involved all aspects of training and development, supervision and providing mentoring support of trainees, including those seeking apprenticeships.
