About Kathy Sipple

After a a long career in sales and marketing, something shifted in me around 2015/2016… It was time for my career to evolve but at that time it was not yet clear how. In 2019 I took on the role of Resiliency Coordinator with Earth Charter Indiana, and ever since, I have grown more effective as I learned about the intricacies of working on regional climate solutions as well as sought further education to give me the needed edge to guide others through the complex process.I believe that for humans to work on climate solutions together we must learn how to create healthy social climates first. Otherwise, power imbalances, leaving needed voices out of important conversations and relying on non-reciprocal/extractive models to power change feels like a temporary fix at best. Therefore, I like to brand my particular tools and methods as “Building Resilient Communities”, putting community care at the center – building healthy teams, united by a common aim and agreeing to work in ways where everyone has a voice and decisions are made collaboratively. Does working collaboratively take more time and effort? Yes, in the short term. However in the long run, projects, organizations and meetings that are run more smoothly and harmoniously tend to keep people engaged and avoid burnout -- well worth time spent laying a solid foundation. This is the approach I implemented while working with NWI Region Resilience, a group of passionate citizens of Northwest Indiana as well as organizations that support its aim. In 2021 we partnered with the Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission and Indiana University’s Environmental Resilience Institute to develop Indiana’s first ever regional greenhouse gas inventory. Based on that data, we spent 2022 building a regional climate action plan framework. I got to help plan and execute the launch of their institute for social technologies in 2020 and participate in their internal sociocracy circle governance as well. I have quickly become an advocate for sociocracy and encourage anyone who leads meetings, organizations, projects or companies to try out one of their free webinars to experience the transformation decentralized decision making offers to help run more efficiently, effectively and inclusively.In November 2020 I took part in the first cohort of their traiining academy by completing Module 1: Foundations of Sociocracy (16 hours). In January 2021 I completed Module 2: Working in Sociocratic Teams (24 hours). My target date to complete certification for Certified Sociocracy Faciliatotr is June 2021. Beyond that I intend to complete the additional coursework (through Module 7) to become a Certified Sociocracy Consultant (target date March 2022.)
