You probably know professionals who earned a degree in one thing and then had a career in a different area. I’m that person too! My degree is in Chemical Engineering. Right out of college, I landed a role as a Project Manager and have never looked back.While my role isn’t that of a Chemical Engineer, I’ve leveraged my education and practical experience to my advantage, and, I believe, my employer’s benefit. I’m a Resource Planning Manager at Acme Manufacturing in the Detroit area. This 110-year-old, family-owned and operated company builds machinery and systems with integrated robotics that finish metal surfaces. Yes, there can be a chemical component in metal finishing, but most of our processes are mechanical: automated grinding, polishing, buffing, and deburring. In other words, our machines make metal parts and products shine, be safer and more precise, work better, and last longer.I don’t do the engineering and programming, but I manage those who do and, a significant part of my job is to communicate with our high-tech customers. I credit my success to my education, innate strengths, and curiosity:• I think like an engineer so I can communicate well with my team and our global customer’s engineers and tech people.• I’m a skilled and natural problem-solver. Problem-solving is what we do best at Acme, no matter what your role is.• I’m very process-oriented, which is why project management has been such a good fit for me. • I’m fascinated by how different things are made. If I’m lucky enough to visit a customer’s plant, it’s like my own little episode of “How It’s Made!”One of the reasons I enjoy working at Acme is because I feel like my work (and me) matters. I can directly see how my actions and work make an impact on my colleagues and customers. At Acme, my potential is virtually limitless!Another reason I like my job is our diverse customer base. I’ve met people from all over the world and have enjoyed learning about their cultures and businesses.
