From teacher to student...Having entered the world of software engineering it has become clear to me that the changes I witnessed in the evolution of education, particularly in computer science, is nothing compared to the changes that take place regularly in technology. The shift from typing classes to coding lessons fuelled my curiosity and led me to embark on my adventure in software engineering. Leaving behind a fulfilling teaching career, I carry forward a rich skill set cultivated in planning, time management, creativity, humour, empathy, and above all, patience. This transformative period has been a dual journey of code and quilts, elevating my love for learning to new heights. From delving into JavaScript, Python, and PostgreSQL, to navigating the intricacies of Flask, React, and Express frameworks — every line of code felt like a stitch in a grand tapestry.Amid the syntax and logic, I discovered the art of quilting, an unexpected parallel passion. Both coding and quilting became sources of joy, each stitch mirroring the meticulousness of algorithms and frameworks. My proudest accomplishments, the Fridge Raiders and Playdate Buddy capstone projects, seamlessly integrated my tech skills with aspects of my life that matter most. Crafting apps that resonate with personal experiences while offering practical solutions was both challenging and incredibly fulfilling. This journey, while not my first in education, has reshaped my confidence. Mastering programming languages, unraveling the mysteries of testing, data structures, and algorithms — concepts I hadn't encountered before — I've been bitten by both the quilting bug and the coding bug.As I gear up for the next project, I reflect on the past year with gratitude. It's not just about mastering languages; it's about the fusion of creativity, problem-solving, and the sheer joy of bringing ideas to life in both code and quilts.

To date I have met with members of the executive committee to discuss pain points of current design. I am designing a suitable database schema which will allow them to decrease the number of emails sent regarding membership and payments.I will create a proposal for the executive outlining my plans. The tech stack I plan to use includes: React.js, Node.js, Express.js

Student Software EngineerSpringboard Oct 2022 - Nov 2023RemoteGraduated from Springboard for their Career Track Software Engineering course. Completed the following projects which showcase some of the skills I acquired:1. Playdate Buddy — React.js, Node.js, Express.js- Created a full-stack application designed to help parents locate suitable places to take their children based on relevant review information left by other parent users and set up playdates with other users.- User data collected through a secure form using json schemas and sanitizing inputs.- Used Google Maps API along with data from users to generate the map for the user based on their location.- Data largely sourced through user input and the Google Maps API and then stored in a PostgreSQL database.- Authorization middleware used throughout the backend routes to ensure a logged in user or the correctly named user is navigating the site. This employs json web tokens, bcrypt library and json schemas.- Application hosted through Render for the backend and Netlify for the frontend. This choice was made as after much research it was clear that Render is most suitable for hosting backend files which consist of Node and Express languages. Whereas, Netlify is a great choice for hosting React apps.2. Fridge Raiders — Python, Flask- Created a full-stack application designed to assist users in deciding what to serve for dinner, taking into account their personal preferences or the ingredients they already possess.- Data sourced from user input and the Spoonacular API.- User data collected through secure forms using WTForms and the built in validator.- Application used global session to store user data for authorization throughout, with comparisons made to check for the correctly named user when accessing routes. Bcrypt library was also used to create a hashed password for the user for safe storage.- User and recipe data stored in a PostgreSQL database.- Application hosted on Render as it was a suitable free option for Python and Flask based apps. -
