About Katie Crotts
Hello! My name is Katie Crotts, and I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, MD. I recently received my PhD in Astronomy from the University of Victoria (where I also received my Masters in 2020), and received my bachelors in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Washington in 2017. My main interests are high contrast imaging of debris disks and exoplanets, as well as characterization of debris disks in scattered light. I'm also particularly interested the asymmetric and complex structures found in debris disks and how they may help us to infer wide-orbit, low mass planets that are difficult to detect with current exoplanet detection methods. For more information about my research and projects, check out my website linked at the top!

Teaching Assistant
As a teaching assistant I am in charge of teaching labs, grading lab reports, and ensuring that my students understood the lab material. The labs I have taught include ASTR 101: Exploring the Night Sky, ASTR 150: Concepts in Modern Astronomy and ASTR 201: The Search for Life in the Universe.
Research Assistant
My research as a graduate student has contributed to the debris disk field through studying the morphologies of debris disks using high-contrast images with the Gemini Planet Imager. I have identified and characterized multiple asymmetrical debris disks in order to study the connection between these asymmetries and hidden planets in the system.
Clue Tutor
Through the CLUE program at the University of Washington, I was a tutor for Astronomy 101 and 150. I helped students with their homework, study for tests, and whatever other help they needed.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Took data of little-studied open clusters using a 1.8-meter telescope in Victoria, Canada. Worked in team to build a Python program called OCMAP, which will be used to standardize stars and determine cluster membership.
