Current work• Scientifically testing and technically implementing the inclusion of new Chinese satellite microwave sounding instruments; being a key milestone deliverable this is a high priority project within the Met Office. In my role as project leader, this has involved: - Understanding of instrument design for thorough quality assessment. - Development of Fortran code, both modifying existing libraries as well as creating bespoke routines, within the wider Met Office observation processing system. - Representing the interests of the Met Office Satellite Applications group in Beijing which enabled more efficient progress of the project as a result of sharing of information, both during the visit and subsequently.• Assessment of error in a key microwave satellite instrument for numerical weather prediction: - Development of Interactive Data Language (IDL) code to perform statistical analysis. - Presented at the international MicroRad Conference in California (2014). This talk was commended for its clarity and a report has been submitted for publication in their proceedings. - Technical implementation and testing in the operational system.Previous work• Use of satellite data for climate applications, focusing mainly on the quality assessment of long term sea surface temperature data sets.• Developed and tested techniques of error correction for satellite sea surface temperature data as part of wider research carried out in the Hadley Centre for a Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) contract.
