About Katie Querin
When you have a look at my work experience, "diverse background" might come to mind. But through every different type of work I have pursued, there is an unbroken thread. I empower people. I help people rise up, sometimes literally. I spent years aboard tall ships teaching people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, and my favourite moments were when the trainees climbed the mast. I'd take a quivering trainee and coach them in climbing the rickety, salt crusted rope ladder until the ship far below them looked like a bath toy. I managed to get almost every one of hundreds of trainees to the top, by digging through their fear to help them connect with their brave heart. I search for the potential in people and situations and bring it to the forefront.I have drawn on these shipboard lessons as the stage manager for Tim Bray Theatre Company, Auckland’s leading theatre for children, by helping create an exceptional company atmosphere and a magical theatre experience. From scheduling rehearsals, leading youth workshops, managing performers, and running multi-venue tours, I am the first point of contact for the performers, venue staff, and design team. There's a common saying- "Not my fault, but it is my problem.” If there is an issue from anyone or anywhere, I handle it. Period. I’ve expanded my ability to handle problems by surrounding myself with people who are better than I am, learning from them and constantly asking questions. If I don’t know how to do something, I find someone does to teach me. It's up to me to ensure the show runs smoothly and the company is supported. I am as undaunted in this workplace as I was out at sea; a storm tearing the ship apart could not get in the way of me doing my job, and nothing is stopping my determination now.I have spearheaded the development of sensory relaxed theatre performances for children with autism, sensory sensitivities, and neurodiversities. I am committed to bringing this accessible theatre to every venue in New Zealand and beyond, so everyone has a chance to experience the joy of theatre no matter their level of need. There was no handbook for putting on these performances, so now I'm writing one. This project has limitless applications outside of theatre, and I will keep pushing forward to spread accessibility across the world. I want to connect with others who strive for equality, and who are working to ensure no person is turned away from an experience because of their needs. Get in touch to help me grow my project and continue to empower people.
