About Katie Thomson

I have a genuine passion and drive for assisting college students in their pursuits for success! My work focuses on the commitment to building and sustaining real relationships. I believe it is through relationships that we cultivate deep meaning and purpose for our work. Whether I am coaching, advising or teaching-- my success is found in the connections built. With a natural strength for motivating and developing others, I pride myself in walking alongside students as they create, pursue and accomplish goals. I am an experienced academic advisor and career coach within the College of Business at Ohio University. With an appreciative inquiry, strength based approach to working with students, I love the opportunity to coach and guide. Skills include career coaching, academic advising, student development, learning styles, academic support services, student success strategies and teaching. With a foundation in Family Studies and a Master's degree in College Student Counseling and Personnel Services, I pride myself in putting people and their stories first.Over the past year I have stepped into the employer relations and engagement space. This has provided incredible opportunity for elevated career conversations, special interest in hiring trends and market needs as well as personal professional growth in event planning, project management, marketing and communications as well as faculty partnerships. It has been so fun to engage in this way! And I'm certain I'm a better career coach because of my experience with employer relations!Ask me my WHY and I'll tell you: I want to continue to know, hear and meet students where they’re at, in order to develop, guide and encourage their personal and professional growth.     In this role I am a member of the Business Academic Advising and Career Services office leadership team within the College of Business. I have been able to continue my work as a career coach, but expand in to career education and employer engagement, two focuses that have ignited passion and growth in my work.My current oversight includes career education and curriculum development for our BA 2000: Career Strategies course, supervision of 2 Assistant Directors of Career (as well as graduate assistants and undergraduate student workers), the planning and execution of innovative employer engagement initiatives, CoB student organization oversight ("Business Class"), First Destination Survey collection, teaching, workshops and whatever else comes my way as it pertains to career! Highlights: - Co-Planned an executed the largest business focused career fair to date - Designed and implemented the first of its kind CoB student organization governing body called "Business Class"- Assist in securing 97%+ completion rate of First Destination Survey, year after year. With nearly 93%+ positive outcomes for graduates- Developed the first social media and digital communication for BAACS office- Identified as a campus voice for career and employer relations at the university level

    Every fall semester I instruct 20 first year students involved in OHIO's Learning Community program. I plan weekly lessons with an emphasis on study skills, major exploration and career opportunities. I focus on building strong relationships through out-of-class activities, intentional class assignments and community based experiences. For the fall 2014 semester, myself along with my Learning Community, won Outstanding Learning Community out of 240 peer communities. In the fall 2018 semester I won Outstanding Instructor for my classroom instruction efforts.

    In this role I academically advised an average of 170+ pre-professional students studying in the College of Health Sciences and Professions at Ohio University. It was through my commitment to Appreciative Advising that I maintained strong relationships with advisees. I became a certified Appreciative Advisor in 2016, equipping me substantial tools for guiding students towards their goals. Semesterly, I helped students select and plan courses, discuss student success strategies and bridge students to campus resources.A large aspect of this role included the use of MyOHIO Success Network, an early alert platform. This system flagged students academically at-risk, providing self-remediation communication in addition to sharing concerns with the students' campus network. With a proactive advising approach I connected with flagged students via text, email, phone and in person. The use of MyOHIO Success Network over the course of the last 3 years, increased OHIO's retention to a record breaking 81.5% as of fall 2019. Additionally, this role allowed for the creation and implementation of academic success workshops, focussing on increasing students' GPA's from the 2.0-2.5 GAP. This project cultivated student connections, retention and personal presentation growth. Other aspects of this role included recruitment, orientation and significant faculty relationships.
