In January 2022, I was promoted to Clinical Nurse Manager in The Fern Dean Nursing Home. My roles included leadership, mentoring, coaching and team co-ordination. I was also responsible for quality improvement, medication management and communication with families and the MDT.I was also granted the responsibility of becoming the designated CPR Trainer for three care homes within Virtue. I worked autonomously, performing training needs analysis and providing CPR, BLS and First Aid training to over 40 staff across three care homes. I was also trained as the Health and Safety Officer for the care home, completing internal audits and ensuring documentation was kept up-to-date on a regular basis.Whilst fulfilling the role of Clinical Nurse Manager, I utilised my excellent problem-solving skills, compassion and efficiency to maintain a positive environment for both staff, residents and their families.

I was entrusted with the responsibility of conducting internal audits, liaising with the Pharmacy, and assisted in the changeover from paper-based medication administration recording to the E-MAR system in late 2021. On a monthly basis, conducting Medication Competency Assessments for nurses and ordering monthly medications for the unit. Ensuring nurses' competency and training with relation to Medication Management is up to date and dealing with any medication errors as needed.

During this time, I completed a course in Effective People Management (QQI Level 6). I maintained my clinical skills and mentored the nursing team while covering shifts on the floor. After completion of the management course and 3 months' probation, I was promoted to Clinical Nurse Manager.

I gained experience in patient care, adapting to new environments and building connections with other healthcare professionals. I worked flexibly, working between 2-5 shifts per week, both days and nights. As a student nurse, I was able to utilise basic clinical skills such as vital signs recording, blood sugar monitoring and assisting the nursing staff with wound management. I worked across a range of 15 different locations, including nursing homes, hospitals, children’s hospitals and emergency departments. This helped me gain an insight into the functioning of different clinical areas and prompted me to use my own initiative, adapting my communication skills and my confidence as a healthcare professional.
