About Katie Johnston
I graduated from a double undergraduate degree in Social Science (Environment) & Environmental Science at RMIT University, Melbourne. During my degree, I maintained a High Distinction average across both areas of my degree and am a member of the Golden Key International Honours Society, which recognises students in the top 15% of their studies. After undertaking volunteer farm work in North America in 2010, I returned to Australia with an appetite for learning about living systems and food production. Formerly a commercial photographer, I was lacking substance in what I did for a living. I completed a Permaculture Design Course at Milkwood Permaculture in Mudgee, NSW in 2011 before enrolling at RMIT the next year and beginning my current academic chapter. My studies were broadly focused on plant science, ecology and environmental policy, and more specifically, I have been keenly interested in courses relating to food ethics and regenerative agricultural techniques. By this, I mean the ethics involved in the production, consumption and distribution of food, particularly in light of the global industrialised food system. I define regenerative to mean that which improves upon, not only ‘sustains’ the land, and in the context of agriculture, I believe we must focus on regenerative practices which work with the ecology of specific landscapes (Agroecology), in order to build equity and resilience in our food systems.Pre-Covid, I worked in Communications and Coordination for CERES Global, the international outreach program of CERES Environment Park in Melbourne. I coordinated with university academics to craft programs relevant to their students' needs and lead environmentally focussed study tours in the Asia-Pacific region. I also held the role of Vice President of the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA) for a number of years. AFSA advocate for and support small-scale farmers in Australia, working towards a fairer food system for land, people and animals. Internationally we worked under La Via Campesina, the International Peasant’s movement, to support their global work towards Food Sovereignty.Currently, I utilise my broad array of experience in both life and communications, as an Engagement Officer in the Future Drought Fund (FDF). Here, I comprise part of the FDF Communications team within the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, where I deliver communications products and stakeholder engagement functions to support Drought Resilience policy and programs that make meaningful change, on the ground, and in a changing climate.
Listed skills include Visual Communication, Hospitality Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Awareness, and 6 others.
