I fell into HR several years ago after finding my favorite aspect of my job was supervising and developing talent. Thankfully, I was mentored by people who encouraged me to pursue HR (and I am lucky to work for an organization excited about talent mobility!), and now I’ve truly found a passion. When I started in the role, I sometimes hesitated to give feedback or suggest an idea, despite strong “gut” instincts, because I was new to the role and to HR. In our culture, however, the expectation is that all employees—regardless of tenure—provide frequent, timely, and respectful feedback. Realizing that I wasn’t doing myself, my colleagues, or the organization any favors by withholding, I began to step out of my comfort zone where I found those honest conversations allowed me to quickly build relationships with the leaders and supervisors I support. This has been an essential aspect of my growth and ability to genuinely partner with others to find win-win solutions for the employee and the organization.I am a generalist, but I am primarily responsible for the talent position of two teams, including performance management, coaching, and supervisor and leader development. I consider myself successful if I am one step ahead of the leaders I support when it comes to people. I also lead our HR compliance and operational processes.Prior to formally landing in HR, I held roles linked by the common thread of people and talent development: I recruited for university admissions; managed multiple talent pipelines and screened for knowledge, skills, and culture alignment; and built relationships with external organizations to connect individuals with internships and full-time roles.I’m grateful every day to work at an organization that prizes integrity and respect while holding all employees to high standards of value creation and innovation.
