My career began teaching English and modern languages at junior and senior high school. A desire to improve my knowledge of Japanese language and culture led me to Japan, where I taught English at a private women's university for 25 years.During my time in Japan I became interested in Japan's national sport, sumo wrestling, which developed into a passion, leading to becoming a sumo commentator for the NHK TV network.My knowledge of foreign languages made it possible to assist both the professional, Japan Sumo Association, and the amateur, International Sumo Federation, in various capacities such as interpreter and stadium announcer for foreign tours and international competitions.Working with amateur sumo in Japan provided the opportunity to be involved, as an executive board member, in the setting up of the Women's Sumo FederationOn my return to Australia I took over as President of the Australian Sumo Federation.Although I no longer commentate for the television, and have retired as Australian Sumo Federation President, I am still very interested in a variety of sumo related activities at home and abroad and remain a board member of the International Sumo Federation.
