As Founder of the social enterprise Ethically Aligned AI, I work with organizations and advise senior leaders on AI governance and moving AI ethics principles into practice through a mix of research, training and consulting. I also speak about responsible AI, privacy and data ethics to corporate audiences, community groups and the media. I’m especially passionate about AI + EDI and ensuring that a diverse set of people are involved in making decisions involving artificial intelligence technologies.Ethically Aligned AI is built on a foundation of my over 20 years of experience in senior leadership roles primarily in the technology and media sectors. My journey into artificial intelligence and ethics started in 2018 when I went back to grad school. I attended a talk with a prominent AI researcher who shared concerns about how some artificial intelligence was being built and deployed in ways that are unethical and harmful. That led to research focused on understanding the ethical choices of AI developers and testing various ethics tools to help improve the development process. The organization has its roots in my graduate research. Some of the highlights thus far include:🚀 Launching Canada’s first AI Ethics Micro-credential with PowerED by Athabasca University. An asynchronous online set of four courses including an intro, data, machine learning models and roboethics.🎨 Creating an ethics reflection journal used to support the AI4Good program by CIFAR and MILA.🤖 Producing the AI + U video series in partnership with the Canadian Civil Liberties Association to educate youth about the ethical issues with AI technologies and data. 🎙️ Hosting the AI4Society Dialogues podcast where I’ve had the opportunity to connect with some of Alberta’s top AI researchers.I’m also proud to volunteer as a Fellow with ForHumanity, a global community leading the important work of building AI audit criteria, to be part of the Women in AI Ethics community and a member of DAMA and IAPP.
