These include book publishers, such as Abrams, Thames & Hudson, The Royal Horticultural Society, Mitchell Beazley, The History Press, Quid Publishing and Global Book Publishing, as well as individuals, such as freelance authors. Recently, I have focused on copywriting for print media and the web (social media, blogs and websites), for organisations such as the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair or individuals in disparate professions.The freelance work I do includes:• writing persuasive and informative copy for websites, newsletters and blogs.• copy-editing and line-editing works of non-fiction (for print or the web) or fiction (including novels and plays).• proofreading works of fiction or non-fiction, including illustrated books, where a discerning design eye and a knowledge of illustrated publishing is necessary.• writing copy for websites, blogs, social media or non-fiction books.• anglicising or Americanising text.• image consultancy and research (finding and sourcing fitting images for a particular book, and acquiring image permissions).• researching appropriate, interesting illustrators, authors or content in accordance with a specific brief for a book or project.

I am thrilled to be working for this California-based educational tech company, creating online content, writing press releases, magazine features and interviews, and managing their social media to promote their innovative apps around the world. iTherapy specialises in creating innovative apps and products that change the lives of children with autism and other communication challenges. They have collaborated with giants such as Microsoft Azure and Epic Games to create unique AI features for their NIH- and NSF-backed, Mensa-award-winning apps. The InnerVoice app has just been chosen as one of just 25 organisations to receive a grant of up to $800,000 by the LEGO foundation.

This in-house role for the lovely team at Quid Publishing (part of The Quarto Group) included:• project-editing a variety of illustrated titles – overseeing the creation of each book, from the initial manuscript stage through to production. This required me to be decisive and trust my own creative judgement, as well as highly organised and a good multitasker, to ensure a book ran on time, and to budget.• working closely with an author to shape the manuscript, line-editing where necessary. Again, this required strong instincts when it came to assessing what would or would not work for a particular topic and audience.• researching and sourcing all of the images for a book, as well as briefing and liaising with the book's designer throughout on the interior layouts and cover.• tailoring and refining each book to fit the specifications and requested changes of each client; Quid, being a co-editions publisher, gave me the opportunity to work with a wide range of illustrated non-fiction publishers from around the world.• copy-editing manuscripts – maintaining a thorough and perfectionistic approach whilst fact-checking and ensuring the text runs smoothly and clearly.• anglicising text for UK titles or Americanising text for US co-editions.• preparing PDF files for repro and checking digital proofs, as well as proofreading printed plotters.• compiling sales materials and writing jacket, catalogue and website copy.• keeping up-to-date with publishing and lifestyle trends, and regularly contributing new ideas for books.

This in-house role provided me with an exciting range of publishing and marketing experience, which included:• researching forthcoming projects in depth and settling on the specific direction of each book through discussions with the publisher.• finding, choosing and sourcing all featured artwork for a book, in accordance with an agreed brief. A keen design eye was essential, as was resourcefulness. This process often required a variety of research methods, in addition to excellent communication skills to liaise with prospective contributing artists.• researching and writing all chapter introductions for a book (which usually amounted to a total of over 5000 words). Striking the right tone for each particular audience was crucial. I also wrote the captions and artists’ biographies.• assessing the content and design of each iteration of a book and working closely with the publisher and art director to improve its quality. A perfectionistic tendency was helpful here, as well as an ability to problem-solve quickly. Often it was essential to find and source examples of a particular, underrepresented type of artwork at very short notice.• proofreading the book carefully to remove any mistakes. • staying extremely organised, utilising Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel and an FTP client to collect and log legal agreements and postal addresses from up to 150 artists at a time.• managing the company’s blog and social media in their entirety. This entailed posting photos in-keeping with Graffito’s offbeat style, promoting new books in grabby, commercial language and running online competitions.• sending out press releases and corresponding with journalists to secure features upon a book’s release.• manning hectic stands at the Frankfurt and London Book Fairs and conducting business meetings alongside the publisher.• staying abreast of the latest counter-cultural trends and regularly contributing new ideas for books.

This part-time role was comprised of:• convincing business directors to book meetings with Cellular Solutions' account managers, using a warm, professional telephone manner, great persuasive skills and determination!• keeping the administrative side of bookings well organised, to assist the account managers with their duties.I was consistently the highest-performing telemarketer throughout my year and a half in this role.
