When my youngest child was born, I was the Director of Production at a small foreign sales & film production company. I was 1 of only 2 female executives and 1 of 2 executives juggling young kids. My career took an unexpected turn just 4 weeks into my maternity leave, when I was fired for 'not being available enough,' despite working from home 20 hours/wk, 4 days after leaving the hospital.At the time, my job was a significant part of my identity, so being fired felt like a punishment for becoming a mother. It felt like in my industry, being a mom suddenly made me less valuable as both a person and an employee.Sadly, my story isn’t unique. Many women feel like they lose their sense of self and face consequences (i.e. reduced hours or job loss) when they become moms. It's not unusual to believe that becoming a mom means giving up all parts of your life – from hobbies & and passions to professional goals to be a good mom. In the US, there is an unspoken idea that a woman can't excel at what she used to and still be a “good mom”. There is pressure to accept being constantly burned out and stretched thin and to not expect to get the help we need to raise our families. Society reinforces this idea by not prioritizing affordable and accessible childcare options while expecting us to "do it all" seamlessly. The solution were often given seems to be to find more ‘me time’ …as if that somehow solves everything.While self-care is important, it can’t fully recharge us or relieve the stress caused by corporate culture’s demands on its mothers.
