After a 30 year career in conservation since graduating in 1998, including 27 years at the National Trust, of which the last 14 were as Head Conservator, I have developed expertise in preventive conservation, remedial conservation, conservation management, wall painting conservation, and heritage science. I have participated in and carried out research on climate change impacts on cultural heritage and its sustainability, understanding the impact of environmental change on heritage objects and historic interiors; public perceptions and enjoyment of cultural heritage conservation and cleaning; managing daylight in historic house interiors; the impact of dust and particulate pollution on historic house collections on open display; and the technique and materials of wall painting conservation. I have led projects on storage and protection and on emergency response. I have taught (Institute of Archaeology, West Dean, Courtauld Institute, ICCROM), published (National Trust Manual of Housekeeping) and presented at national and international conferences (including Icon, IIC, ICOM-CC, and AIC), and supported professional accreditation through being a member and latterly chair of Icon's PACR Accreditation Committee. I have also been a trustee of the National Heritage Science Forum and have contributed to the strategic development of heritage science. I am interested in the strategic role of cultural heritage conservation and pursue this in my research and publication roles.
